A first-of-its-kind library was inaugurated in
Karachi on wednesday December 25th 2019, the birthday of Pakistan's
founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The project is an
initiative of Karachi Commissioner Iftikhar Ali Shalawani. The library is located
near the Metropol building. Chief Secretary Sindh Mumtaz Ali Shah was the chief
guest on the occasion. Addressing the
function, Iftikhar Ali Shalawani said that he has directed the Deputy
Commissioners of each district to set up a street library after selecting their
locations. He said that the administration was improving Karachi on the
directives of Chief Minister Sindh and Chief Secretary. He said that an
initiative has been taken to revive the culture of book reading which should be
appreciated and promoted. The Chief Secretary appreciated the efforts of
Commissioner Karachi in taking creative initiative. Between the portrait of
Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and other members of the Pakistan Movement,
wooden books are placed along the decoration wall around the Metropolis
building. The library will operate on a "take the book and leave the
book" basis. The
idea behind Pakistan’s first street library is to promote the culture of
reading so our young generation learns value books.
During my stay in Karachi two year ago, I intended to have soup with my friend. So we offered Maghrib prayers in Karachi Gymkhana mosque with friend and walked to the most awakening area of Karachi which is Saddar.
Go straight on Merewether road after crossing first roundabout and few steps ahead in front of the Air Arabia Office Karachi office next to village restaurant, a beautiful sitting area and lights attracted us towards it. There was a pleasant feeling and I found myself in front of Street Library of Karachi. Never the less we gave up on our soup desire and we lost ourselves in the shelves of books and newspapers of street library. We picked up some books and reviewed them and studied newspapers which gave us pretty pleasant feelings. Read Qauid-e-Azam and Allama iqbal messages written on walls from my heart we pay Tribute to every other person who had put all of their efforts to building up this mesmerizing place.
Street library shows the attachment of people of Karachi with literature.
